MAHDC Annual Symposium

The Maryland Association of Historic District Commissions announces the 2018 MAHDC Annual Symposium to be held on Saturday, June 16th, at the University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation - GSAPP, College Park, MD from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registration will open at 8:30 a.m. 


This year’s theme is: “Historic Communities and Affordability – When Money is Tight but the Roof Isn’t...”

Session topics will focus on preservation economics, such as historic tax credits, and the Secretary of Interior Standards and their application in affordable restoration, rehabilitation and maintenance strategies. 

  • Why is making preservation more affordable so critical to our preservation goals? 
  • What financial incentives and tools (both well-known and less common) are available at lower costs? 
  • How do commissions and staff guide property owners and architects toward less expensive solutions that are still in accordance with design guidelines? 
  • How do commission and staff address modern alternative materials? 


SYMPOSIUM DESCRIPTION 

The full-day symposium will tackle the challenges and opportunities for making preservation more affordable. Historic preservation commissioners, local government planning staff, architects, historic property owners, and preservationists will participate in interactive sessions led by leading practitioners in the field to consider: 

The symposium is eligible for CLG Educational and Training Funds reimbursement as formal commissioner training. AIA Continuing Education Credits are being pursued. 

Light breakfast, mid-morning snack, and lunch will be provided. 

An exhibition hall with vendor and university co-sponsor tables will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
